Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture. This is a new series of commentaries on Sacred Scripture based on sound biblical scholarship and written by a team of outstanding Catholic Scriptural scholars. These books promise to provide Catholics with highly readable commentaries to the Bible and should be a wonderful addition to the existing Catholic literature on Scripture. I have only recently received the first two books of the series -- (1) The Gospel of Mark and (2) 1st and 2nd Timothy and Titus -- and have already found them to be extremely useful. Other volumes will be available as they are published. If you purchase them from Amazon, you will save over 30% off the list price. (See links for each book above). For additional information, visit the series' website: click here.
Ignatius Catholic Study Bible. This series by Ignatius Press is still in the making. Each text contains one or more New Testament books, plus extensive introductory material, commentary, notes and study questions. At the present time (early 2009) I believe nine volumes have been published, each listed at a reasonable price of under $10. Interestingly, the price at Amazon is no less than the publisher's direct price. Not only is this a good series from the doctrinal perspective, but each text is a handy size and easy to take with you when you're going to be waiting in the dentist's or doctor's office.
Come and See Catholic Bible Study. A very nice new Bible study series. Written by Fr. Joseph Ponessa, S.S.D. and Laurie Watson Mannhardt, Ph.D., it offers an interesting thematic approach to Bible study. So far (early 2009) they have published seven volumes, and expect to publish five more to complete the series. The current volumes cover: Genesis; Moses and the Torah; David and the Psalms; Prophets and Apostles; The Synoptics; the Gospel of John; and Acts and Letters. The series is designed for both individual and group study, and each volume is available on Amazon for between $15 and $20 each -- not cheap but worth it. (They've also started a parallel Bible study series for children -- nice gifts for children and grandchildren.) To visit the Come and See website and get more details on the series, click here.
Biblia Clerus. A wonderful, new Vatican website designed for the clergy but available to all. It allows you to connect Sacred Scripture to the complete works of Doctors of the Church, Councils, Encyclicals, teachings of the Popes, Catechisms, as well as commentaries from secular literature. You can even download the entire site to your PC.
Catholic Bible Study Website. This is a part of eCatholicHub.net and contains some brief introductions to the books of the Bible, along with maps and other information. Worth a visit.
Pope Benedict on Sacred Scripture in the Life of the Church. This first address on Scripture in the pontificate of Benedict XVI commemorates the 40th anniversary of Vatican II’s Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum. A must read for any Catholic interested in studying Holy Scripture.
...more to come.
Wanted: People who would like to deepen their faith through a better understanding of Scripture. No experience necessary. Come join our parish Bible Study.
The Basics:
This is an ongoing Bible Study. You may join at any time.
We study the Bible as an integrated whole: as the Word of God in which the Old Testament is fulfilled in the New.
Sessions are facilitated by Deacon Dana or occasionally by another deacon of the parish
Everyone is invited. No need to sign-up; just show up...and bring your Bible.
Suggest you use a New American Bible, although the Revised Standard Version (Catholic Edition) and New Jerusalem Bible are fine. The main requirement is that it be a Catholic Bible.
Choose either one of two sessions:
Session 1: Wednesday from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. in the church hall (after the 8:30 a.m. Mass)
